In the robust Republican Primary for the new Ninth Congressional District, State Senator Brent Taylor won the coveted endorsement from President Trump. On an eight and a half inch by eleven inch full color direct mailer, candidate Taylor shares the President’s Truth Social post in full and large enough to cover half of one side of the mailer. Flip the piece over, and you find in large bold letters, “Brent Taylor has my Complete and Total Endorsement.”
Taylor won the primary with 43% of the votes in a field of four candidates. Then, President Trump went missing!
On the homepage, large photos of Senators Blackburn and Hagerty are prominent, but not the President. A tab titled “Endorsements” leads to a long list of Taylor supporters from Tennessee Congress members to state legislators to aldermen in some of the smallest communities in the Ninth District. But no Trump. Taylor’s recent messaging does not mention Trump much. It’s a lot more about “chaos” and “communism.”
Trump is not only missing from Taylor’s website, but other Republican candidates have begun to scrub their websites of Trump too. That is because for the first time ever, Trump is underwater in “red states.” In recent polling, more Tennessee voters disapprove of Trump than approve of him. In fact, according to a recent poll by the conservative think-tank, The Beacon Center, more than half (51%) of Tennesseans disapprove of the job Trump is doing as President. Whether that ultimately translates into a loss for Taylor remains to be seen, but it is concerning enough that the campaign has chosen to distance itself from the White House even though the district was drawn specifically for Taylor.
Here’s who else is missing from Taylor’s list:
Kid Rock and Congressman Jim Jordan.
Both endorsements were touted in the primary but cannot be found on the “Endorsements” page. As I previously wrote, Jordan has been embroiled in a scandal about the sexual abuse of athletes at Ohio State when he was assistant coach of the wrestling team. Victims have claimed they reported the abuse to Jordan, and he turned a blind eye.
Rock, of course, has been no stranger to controversy with lyrics that advocate for statutory rape, his prominent display of the Confederate flag, and misogynistic and profanity-filled rants about prominent women in the entertainment industry.
It’s hard to imagine why one would want to hide these endorsements.
